France will start intercepting small boats in Channel after British demands
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, after months of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and saying there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police representative says officers will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief change towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official departed from office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French officials will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
